TIGER KITTEN- Test oF a trini teen heroine-01
The air in Belmont hung thick and still, smelling of charcoal smoke and the salt-sweat of the city. Zariah Baptiste stood before the chipped mirror in her small bedroom, the overhead fan churning the heat rather than dissipating it. She pulled the last piece of her costume over her head: a sculpted bikini, the cheap fabric stretched taut across her eighteen-year-old frame, a vibrant, chaotic pattern of black spots on tawny gold. Ocelot. Not the traditional tiger stripes of the legend, but close enough.
She smoothed the fabric over her hips, the material clinging like a second skin, the sensation a powerful, almost overwhelming intimacy. The matching mask, molded high over her cheekbones, settled into place, the eyeholes sharp amber slits. Tiger Cat vanished ten days ago. The city, usually humming with the assurance of her barefoot protection, felt hollow, the crime blotter swelling like a bruise. Zariah had waited. She had watched the news feeds, listened to the panicked whispers on Frederick Street. Waiting accomplished nothing.
Her grandmother’s voice drifted up the narrow wooden staircase, sharp and clear despite the two floors separating them.
You think you going to that fete tonight? Don't forget, I need that okra chopped, and don’t come back smelling like rum and bad decisions.
Zariah grabbed the utility belt, its leather soft and worn, strapping it low across her waist.
I have a lot of homework, I might just stay in.
Homework? Since when a little flash of lightning like you care about calculus?
Since the world started feeling wobbly, Zariah thought, pressing her lips together.
She tested the tension in her calves. Tiger Cat moved like water and stone, a myth made flesh. Zariah moved like a nervous adolescent in cheap spandex, but she possessed the same core fire.
She slipped out the window, landing silently on the rusted zinc roof of the shed next door, the metal hot even in the deepening twilight. She ran along the rooftops, a blur of spotted gold against the darkening sky. She needed the Woodbrook district. Tiger Cat operated everywhere, but her most recent known territory, before the silence, was around the old Queen’s Park Savannah mansions.TIGER KITTEN- Test oF a trini teen heroine-01: http://memberslogin.hipcomix.com/gallery3/index.php/Mitru/Tiger-Kitten/TESTS-OF-A-TRINI-TEEN-HEROINE Read on...
