 Super San - THE SLEEPY ADVENTURES - 08 The cold air parted like silk around her as Super San descended, Tokyo's electric heartbeat fading to a memory behind her. The swamp rose to meet her, a breathing thing of shadow and moisture, its mist curling upward in greeting.
No birds. No insects. Only the distant drip of water and something else, something mechanical humming beneath the silence.
She moved through the reeds like a ghost, her white bodysuit catching moonlight in pale flashes. The red circle on her chest rose and fell with controlled breaths.
The machines emerged from the fog like half-remembered dreams. Tubes of glass pulsed with amber fluid. Gears turned without apparent power source, grinding mud between their teeth. Lights blinked in patterns that suggested language, code, intention.
"Someone built this. Someone maintains it." Resolved Super San. Her whisper vanished into the mist. The cold climbed her spine, not from temperature alone.
Shapes detached from the fog. They moved like smoke given hunger, their forms shifting between humanoid suggestion and pure vapor. Eyes burned within them, pale blue, unblinking, ancient with malice. Super San straightened, fists clenching at her sides, her stance widening for combat.
"Welcome, daughter of cities."... "Your strength is stone. We are river." The voice came from everywhere, from the water itself, from inside her own skull.
She pivoted, kicked, found only mist. Another blow, another, each one exhausting her while the creatures suffered nothing. They circled, their vaporous bodies weaving patterns that made her eyes ache.
"Stop hiding... Face me!"
They converged. Not with fists or claws, with themselves, with their substance. The fog they shed clung to her skin, sank through the white fabric of her suit, found her lungs. She coughed, stumbled, felt her limbs grow heavy as waterlogged wood.
